Some years ago a group of us went out to dinner. It was a nice place with a big round table to accommodate us all. The waitresses all wore cute little aprons tied in a big bow in the back. When the waitress got around to me to take my order, she was facing me and had her back to Mike, who must have been 3ish at the time and sitting in a highchair. He reached over, grabbed the sash, and untied that big bow. Fortunately she caught her apron before it fell. I can't remember if Mike laughed or just had a stunned look on his face.

It was over the week of July 4th probably about 17 years ago. The four of us, Diana, Paul, Kyle and I went on a vacation out to the west coast with our trailer. We reached the thriving metropolis of Sydney, NE when the trailer decided to lose an axle. Well, it didn't fall off but the bearings in the axle seized up causing one of the wheels to no longer turn. That seemed to be a problem. That and the smoke billowing out from the dragging tire. After a little panic (the thought was where there is smoke there is fire, no fire thankfully) we managed to get a call to a towing service. Out came a truck from Rood's Tire Service in Sydney, and, after blocking up the wheel somehow, escorted us back to town. He took us to the lot of Rood's right off of the main street. When we were parked, dumped the trailer and figured out the problem he reported that we would need a new axle and it would be three days before we got one air freighted to us. (I saw dollar signs.) I asked him where we could stay and he responded, "That's your home there, ain't it?" pointing to the trailer. "Just stay there." He ran an extension cord out to us. We were on the lot, which was a bit higher than the street with the trailer sideways to the street just above the sidewalk. We got out our little grill, grilled for a couple days in the parking lot. On the fourth of July, there was a car parade down the main drag that we had a front row seat to. We got out our folding chairs and sat around the fire a couple of nights. We drove into town and went to the public pool. That way we could swim AND get a shower. We hit a restaurant and a laundromat. We also discovered that Cabella's was based in Sydney. Despite the 'campground' we had a pretty full time. We almost hated to leave. Almost. Best of all, on the way out of town there was a dump station for the trailer.

All of a sudden he decided to put his hands up by the needle. I kept telling him, "No", but he persisted. I finally slapped his hand (lightly, of course). Not having been slapped or spanked before (because he was the perfect child), he thought it was a game. He started laughing and kept putting his hand back on the machine. Finally I just quit and we left the room.
Mike, you can't remember a smidge of this, can you?

As I recall, this was a continuation of the same trip mentioned elsewhere here. To reiterate, it was COLD!! I would like to think it was only the intrepid that would fish, but in retrospect, it was probably the 'Don't know enough to get in out of the cold' crew. We motored up Lake Taneycomo at a pretty good clip. I think we figured that the faster we got there the shorter the time spent with the air hitting us. I remember sitting in the bow, facing the rear, trying to make myself as small as possible. Hat, gloves, boots, hood, heavy coat, not enough. We reached our favorite spot - and it started to sleet! The sound of all that sleet 'tinking' off of that metal boat was interesting. We threw our lines in the water, started drifting and CATCHING FISH! I am pretty sure I made Tim and the Unc angry, because every few minutes we would have to troll upstream to where my line was tangled somewhere on the bottom. That didn't bother them too much. It's when I got my line untangled and pulled it in that got to them. That's because about 80% of the time, it was caught with a nice trout on the end of the line. I don't remember how many I caught, I just remember that it all of a sudden wasn't so cold.

It was the 1979-80 school year and I was at college. I remember seeing this cute thing eating by herself in the cafeteria. I decided that that just would not do. I went to her table, grabbed her food tray and asked her if she would like to come and sit with us (my roommate was there too). She didn't say anything, just got a nervous look and, of course, followed her food. She was pretty shy. We chatted for a bit and said we would pick her up for food and a movie. We stopped at White Castle on our way to the theater. A taste treat she had never had ( and still won\'t to this day). The movie was '10' with Bo Derrick. In retrospect, perhaps not the best date night choices but ... Been married now for almost 40 years. I think it was a great first date! (Apparently, opinions vary.)

There was a period of time (about 10 years) where every end of February, beginning of March the Unc, some special guest and I would go trout fishing down in Branson. As you would expect, it was pretty cold! On this particular year, Tim Filla went with us and was kind enough to take his boat. I remember, it was 0 dark thirty and we were going to head out to do some fishing. It was freezing. Actually a little below. The Unc and I were on the dock nearer the shore and Tim was getting his boat ready. The Unc and I were chatting when we heard, "SNAP!!" a second then, calmly, "Shiiitt!". We both looked over and saw Tim holding part of the steering wheel. The chunk from 10:30 to about 1:30 was missing from the boat. We still went fishing and I laughed every time I looked at Tim. It looked like he had the wheel from the Batmobile. The fishing was incredible that day, but, that's another story.

Around 2008 or 2009, Diana had gone up north to visit family. I stayed home for whatever reason but decided to go up and visit her later. I had purchased my Harley in 2006 and this seemed like a great time for that 'epic' road trip that everyone dreams about. I started out about 6 in the morning and I remember the air being quite brisk. I had short sleeves on and more than once thought about stopping to put on a jacket but never quite got cold enough to do it. It was exhilarating! Wentzville, Bowling Green, Hannibal all slipped by and everything was right with the world. State line crossed and things were glorious. Just south of Iowa City, however, things began making me nervous. It seems the sky going north was beginning to darken. Some might say even look ominous. As a fairly new rider, I have not been in rain often. As a matter of fact, I kind of feared riding in the rain. I hit Iowa City and the rain hit me. I slowed down, mainly because those little droplets really hurt. I rode from Iowa City all the way to the north of Rochester, MN in rain. Not just mist, rain! About 5 hours worth. It finally broke north of Rochester. By the time I hit Moose Lake my clothes were finally dry!! I spent about 4 or 5 days up north and came home. As soon as I left Chisholm, yep, it started raining. It followed me all the way to Iowa. I finally dried off by Waterloo. I don't think I fear the rain as much anymore. I just DO NOT like to ride in it.

Most kids don't start travelling until they are old enough to appreciate it. I guess Diana and I never got that memo. We had a Chevy S10 pickup with a topper in the 90's. I don't know if it was legal but we put a thick foam mattress in the back, covered it with a sheet, added some stereo speakers, put Diana and Paul in back, attached a pop-up trailer and traveled. One trip took us to Timber Lee camp in Wisconsin. The day we were leaving was the day that a huge storm rolled in. Being a pop-up, there was a great deal of outdoor work required to break camp and Paul 'needed' to help. After just a few minutes we were soaked. Fortunately, the camp was fairly empty so we drove the truck under a pavilion that happened to be near the showers. A quick hot shower, in the back with Diana and we were on the road. As I recall, he was sleeping after no time, as was mom.

This story goes back about 24 or 25 years. Kyle was about 1 or 2 years old and we had just purchased a travel trailer. We were on our way to Memphis and stopped at a campground in Arkansas. The campground was a pleasant place with a lake (Diana would say pond). The campsites were positioned around the lake. The arrangement was campsite on top, the ground fell off in a nice terrace (about 30 to 35 degree slope) for about 6 to 8 feet, a level area with a picnic table about 5 feet wide and then another slope about 10 feet to the lake. Early in the morning I got up and out of the trailer, set up a Coleman stove on the picnic table and started breakfast. As I was sitting there frying bacon, I saw the trailer door open and out comes Kyle. He approaches the hill and . . . all of a sudden, all I see is a ball of a toddler rolling down the hill, cross the flat and head toward the lake. He rolled about 1/2 way down and stopped. He was still for about 2 seconds, then got up and walked back to the trailer where he has some toys to play with. In typical Kyle fashion, nothing was said. It was as if nothing ever happened.

Years ago, PK (pre-kid) Diana and I would take a mini vacation weekend at a hotel in Earth City. The Doubletree. They had fantastic chocolate chip cookies, a wonderful breakfast, lots of stuff nearby to do and the price was attractive. In the morning, we went down to the breakfast which had a lot. Eggs, bacon, cereal, pancakes all served up almost to order. We were in line and each of us grabbed a coffee cup and filled it up from the large urns that were there. As we were waiting in line for our food to be served Diana took a sip of her coffee and started making the most horrible strangling noises! Once I determined that she was OK I asked what the deal was. She responded that what she put in her cup was NOT coffee but warm syrup. (I guess I can see how that would be a little rough.) She said that she would go get a cup of COFFEE and keep the cup of syrup for us to use as we were getting pancakes. I got the food on our tray, found a table and sat down with Diana. Naturally, she grabs the cup of coffee and pours it all over her pancakes. It was not a very good morning for my lovely bride. She was (and is) a good sport though, and we still laugh about that meal.

The parking lot was such that there were a row of spots in the middle of traffic going in opposite directions. Tom came in the lot from one place and dad entered from another. They both saw the same spot at the same time. The race was on! Dad going from the south, Tom coming from the north. Tom got there just a little faster but a little too 'hot'. He hit the car next to the empty spot. I remember seeing that car bounce. I honestly can't remember if, to add insult to injury, if dad got the spot too or if he gave it to Tom. You can imagine what we joked about for the rest of that week.

When I was younger than about 12 or so, we used to vacation with another family. Dad. mom and I would be in one car and The Morrow's, Tom, Rosie, Vicky and Tommy would be in another. I remember one trip to the west (Colorado) that we took. Apparently, there was always some bet going on between dad and Tom. I guess this one had to do with gas mileage. Dad had a Grand Prix and Tom had some type of Ford. As a result, as we went in and out of the mountains, we did so with the air off and the windows down. It wasn't too bad, even though it was summer, because we were in the mountains. We had walkie talkies and we would talk with each other between the cars. At one point we were on the highway and we were about to overtake Tom's car. As we got close, I remember dad rolling up the windows and telling us all to look cool. After we passed, we could roll down the windows again. I don't know if the ruse worked, but it sure makes me smile to think about.

My paternal grandmother, Grandma Schweickhardt, was big into genealogy (way before it was cool or easy). She researched (I don't know how but it couldn't have been easy in the pre-internet days) and discovered some interesting things about our lineage. She discovered that we are pretty directly descended from Edward Rutledge (my grandma's maiden name) who was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. Moving forward, apparently Davy Crockett is a branch in the old family tree. Another interesting find has to do with Abraham Lincoln. Apparently, Abraham Lincoln's first love (at least that's how the internet describes it) was Ann Rutledge. We were almost related. They probably would have married had Ann not inconveniently died from typhoid. All of this to say that, because of her research, my grandmother became a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).

Every year, dad would treat all of his employees to a float trip at some time in the summer. It was a great opportunity for the employees to see each other as there were two different locations. I was pretty newly married and Diana was with me (on her first float trip with dad). Morning arrived and we were all down at the water putting in our canoes. Diana, looking forward to it, was a little impatient with me because I hadn't really moved much. Finally, all of the others had put in except for dad and my canoe. Diana was saying, "Come on, let's go!". I told her, "Just a minute more." and waited for dad to get in his canoe and put out. As was his practice, it was halfway up the bank, filled with coolers, dad, Jane, and Jane's daughter sitting in the middle. It was pointed towards the shore. Dad usually tried to take the easy way out in a canoe and it always caused him to work harder. They started digging and pushing back with the paddles to get started. The boat began to move, slowly. They kept pushing and finally it got into water about 10 to 12 inches deep. One more dig . . . . and they all went over. Less than 5 feet off the shore, they spilled the whole mess. Coolers, life jackets, paddles, cans of beer all began floating down the river. Everyone around went into save the cooler mode. Once they stood up in the river, it was apparent that Jane and her daughter were upset with dad. Everything got loaded back into the canoe and I held it in the shallow water so that they could get in and going. Jennifer (her daughter) decided to go with us because she didn't want to tip again. Diana understood my 'slow' start. I wasn't disappointed!
